How to calculate MPEG file size

When using constant bit rate encoding you can roughly estimate the file size in kilobytes by multiplying the sum of video bit rate and the audio bitrate by the runtime divided by 8.

Estimated KB = (Video bitrate + Audio bitrate) X (Runtime/8)

You should add a 2% or 3% "fudge factor" to your estimate to make sure it will fit on your CD.

Fudged KB = Estimated KB * 1.02

Step-by-Step Procedure

Load you source file and set the target file name.

On the Output File Properties tab, remove the check from Use MPEG Presets and check the Display Audio Codec Dialog box.

On the MPEG Setting tab, select the video bit rate that you have calculated from the formula at the top of this page and click the Start button.

NOTE:

For MPEG-1 and VCD the Average Bit Rate only editable video bitrate option. When encoding to MPEG-2 (SVCD or DVD) the average bitrate, the minimum bit rate and the maximum bit rate can be edited. When encoding to MPEG-2 be sure that the average lies between the minimum and maximum or the encoder will fail.

In the MPEG Audio Bit Rate window, select the audio bit rate that you have calculated from the formula at the top of this page and click the OK button

Note that if your target file is intended to be played back on a stand alone VCD or DVD player, changing the the audio bit rate from the standard defaults may produce unsatisfactory results.

When encoding to MPEG-2 (SVCD or DVD) the audio bitrate should not be changed.

Some typical results are shown below:
