Troubleshooting

The vast majority of problems are caused by damaged source movies but there can also be issues with installed technology and incompatible components.

To rule out your hardware and operating system, test using a known good source file such as one of the samples on our support web:

  • If you cannot convert any of the file on our web site the issue is with your computer or the installed technology. In many cases the DirectX Diagnostic tool will pinpoint the problem. To run the DirectX Diagnostic tool, click on your Start button, select Run from the menu, type in DXDIAG.EXE and press the OK button.
  • If you can convert any file the issue is not with your computer or technology.
  • If can convert all the samples the issue is with your source file. Many badly formatted source files can be fixed by re-indexing or re-keying the original. Tools such as VirtualDub or Microsoft's Windows Media Tools are available free on the internet.
  • If you can convert all but one format, the issue is with the codec. Some free codecs will allow you to view files but require that you purchase an upgrade to edit or convert. Check the codec manufacturer's web site for updates or bug fixes.

If conversion stops before completion you may be able to get some clue to the cause by viewing the log file.

If your movie contains more than 32,000 frames only the last 32,000 actions will be displayed.
